Michael Kuhn (left), Mike
Momjian, Sail Instructor (Center) and myself. Interesting tidbit about
Mike Momjian is that he never wore the same cap twice to a sail lesson,
which makes me
wonder how many caps he has.
Interesting tidbit about the three of
us is that we are all in the technical information services industry
where Michael (Accenture) and Mike (IBM) are more in the technical design and
implementation side and I (BTI) am on the sales side. All three of us are declared as
"techies" from Michael's wife Karen. However, these three
techies with all our gadgets during our workday escape and go back in
time to get mentally recharged and relaxed on a 50 year old plus boat where the only
electrical item on the boat is a solar panel to charge the running
lights for night time sailing. Everything else on the
boat is original from its design in the 1940's and its manual right down
to the hand powered bilge pump. Cell phones and Blackberry's were stowed
under deck along with a hand held weather radio.
This adherence to the original specifications
allows it to be qualified in the "one class" races which occur
on Lake Michigan throughout the summer. A one class race is many of
the same identical boats racing against each other where only the crew's
skill and luck will be the deciding factor of winning the race.
There is a large
national following for this small old racing boat and Chicago will be
home in August 2004 to the National
Regatta of Rhodes 19 one class boats.
